the town of An Daineach
An Daineach — ón sloinne Dain (< Dane, Dann?; < d'Aveni?)Struchtúr an-chomónta i logainmneacha Chontae na Mí is ea an téarma lonnaíochta Angla-Normannach -tún (-town ní ba dhéanaí) á cháiliú le hainm pearsanta nó le sloinne. Is é an focal Gaeilge a fhreagraíonn do -town i logainmeacha den chineál sin ná baile, agus rinneadh formhór na logainmneacha Béarla seo a ghaelú go nádúrtha ar an múnla baile + ainm/sloinne gaelaithe. Féach na tagairtí stairiúla seo a leanas: ‘Daneston’ (1552), ‘Danistowne’ (1654), ‘Baile Dha//inne’ Ainmleabhar, scríofa le peann luaidhe (1836).
Bhí an paróiste seo i seilbh mhuintir d'Aveni (‘de Aveni(e)', 'de Auini', Chart. St. Mary’s Abbey, Dublin, I 144, 157, 158, 229, 253; II 152) agus b'fhéidir gurb é sin an sloinne atá caomhnaithe sa logainm; cf. an -v- láir i bhfoirmeacha luatha ar nós ‘Dovenayestoun’. Ach cuir i gcás freisin an sloinne Brl. Devenish ‘duine as Devon’, a bhfuil fianaise air i measc na Sean-Ghall in Éirinn. Tá an sloinne sin le fáil sa logainm bf Baile an Doimhnisigh/Ballindinas (#53825) i gContae Loch Garman (1540 ‘Devenston’, 1628 ‘Ballyndenish al' De[v]einstowne’). Díol mór spéise mar sin go raibh duine darbh ainm ‘Roger Devenish’ ina bhiocáire sa pharóiste seo idir chamáin i gContae na Mí sa bhliain 1403. Féach leis cailliúint an -v- láir as an sloinne Brl. Overy sa logainm bf Baile Órthaí/Oristown (#38324) sa chontae céanna (1536 ‘Overeston’, 1581 ‘Oreston’, 1836 ‘Baile oraidhe’ pl:AL).
Léirítear guta deiridh san fhoirm a breacadh ó Ghaeilgeoirí na háite i 1836 (‘Baile Dha//inne’) (comhartha béime seachas fadaithe ab ea an dá líne // os cionn litreach); caighdeánú air sin atá sa leagan Gaeilge Baile an Dainigh.
[CÓC]
- English
the town of An Daineach
An Daineach — from the surname Dain (< Dane, Dann?; < d'Aveni?)Possibly from the surname d'Aveni who formerly held land here (‘de Aveni(e)’, ‘de Auini’, Chart. St. Mary’s Abbey, Dublin, I 144, 157, 158, 229, 253; II 152); see early historical forms of the place-name such as ‘Dovenayestoun’ which clearly reflect the internal -v- of that surname. On the other hand, it may also contain the English surname Devenish “one from Devon”, which is attested among the Anglo-Normans elsewhere in Ireland. That surname is found in the placename bf Baile an Doimhnisigh/Ballindinas (#53825) in County Wexford (1540 ‘Devenston’, 1628 ‘Ballyndenish al' De[v]einstowne’). It is very interesting to note, therefore, that one ‘Roger Devenish’ was vicar of the church at Danestown, County Meath, in 1403. Note a similar loss of the -v- from the English surname Overy in the placename bf Baile Órthaí/Oristown (#38324) in the same county (1536 ‘Overeston’, 1581 ‘Oreston’, 1836 ‘Baile oraidhe’ pl:AL).
The Irish name Baile an Dainigh is a standardised version based on the local form ‘Baile Dha//inne’ recorded in 1836 (the symbol // over a vowel indicated stress, rather than lengthening), which reflects a vocalic ending.
(Conchubhar Ó Crualaoich).
