"Pinkman: Lios-a’-Dlúigh = Fort of the wisp. The flúigh, or Dlúigh – Fullen, from the name of the druid, who first practised the art, was a wisp of straw or hay or grass, on which a charm or incantation was pronounced for a person. (Compare O’Curry, Manners and Customs, Vol. II, pages 203-4). In pagan times, and well into Christian times, madness was believed to be due to some malign, magical agency – very often the work of some druid. The druid or the evil agent, prepared a ‘madman’s wisp’ or ‘fluttering wisp’ (dluigh) – a little wisp of straw or hay into which he pronounced some terrible incantations, and awaiting his opportunity he flung it into the face of his victim. So generally was this believed to cause madness that in many ancient writings, a madman is described as one upon whom the ‘Dlúigh Fullon’ or magic wish had been thrown. "
