Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the crest of Mac Í
Mac Í — ainm pearsanta (naoimh); féach Corpus Genealogiarum Sanctorum Hiberniæ
Is léir ar an bhfianaise stairiúil is luaithe, e.g. 'Tir meicc I' (1180c), gurbh é Tír Mhic Í, 'the land of Mac Í', an t-ainm ó cheart; is cosúil gur tuigeadh níos déanaí gurbh é an focal cíor, sa chiall 'iomaire, mullach', a bhí sa chéad eilimint agus é ag tagairt don sliabh (.i. Sliabh Chíor Mhic Í)

  • English

    the crest of Mac Í
Mac Í — personal name (saint's name); see Corpus Genealogiarum Sanctorum Hiberniæ
The earliest evidence, e.g. 'Tir meicc I' (1180c), shows that the original name was Tír Mhic Í, 'the land of Mac Í'; it appears that the first element was later understood to be the word cíor, 'crest, ridge', referring to the mountain (i.e., Sliabh Chíor Mhic Í/Kirikee Mountain)
