Ní fios cad is brí le putóg sa chás seo.
Na ceithre bailte fearainn seo An Cnocán Beag, An Cnocán Gorm, An Cnocán (Nash), agus Cnocán Putóg, is fo-ranna iad den bhunainm An Cnocán (féach 1302 ‘Cnokkam’, 1601 ‘Knockane’).
San fhianaise stairiúil ón 17ú agus ón 18ú haois níl le fáil ach an dá fhoroinn, mar atá Cnocán Putóg agus ainm eile nach maireann, .i. 'Knockanecanboy', '-canvoy', et var. (< ? Cnocán Ceannbhuí; cf. bf Cill Ceannbhuí, Co. Phort Láirge). - English

The meaning of putóg in this context is unknown.
The four townlands An Cnocán Beag/Knockanebeg, An Cnocán Gorm/Knockane (Gurm), An Cnocán (Nash)/Knockane (Nash), and Cnocán Putóg/Knockane (Puttoge) are subdivisions of the original name An Cnocán (see 1302 ‘Cnokkam’, 1601 ‘Knockane’).
In the historical evidence from the 17th and 18th centuries only two subdivisions are found, namely Cnocán Putóg and the now-defunct name 'Knockanecanboy', '-canvoy', et var. (< ? Cnocán Ceannbhuí; cf. bf Cill Ceannbhuí, Co. Waterford).
