Ainm ar ‘leper house’ < (Mary) Magdalene
In aiste dar teideal ‘Leinster Leper Houses’ a foilsíodh in Kildare Archaeological Society Journal (1966–7) tá cuntas ag G.A. Lee ar chúpla áit den ainm seo i gCo. na Mí. Séard atá san ainm Maudlin ná foirm Mhéan-Bhéarla den ainm Magdalene, ag tagairt siar do Mháire Mhaidiléana, éarlamh a lán tithe (nó ospidéal) lobhar; i bhfocail Lee: ‘A leper or lazar house was often known as the ‘Maudlin House’, Maudlin being a corruption of the name Magdalene, and the site and grounds of the hospital, or its endowed lands, were often called “The Maudlins”’. Tá tagairt in Irish Monastic Possessions do ‘Mawdeleyns’, a bhí i seilbh Mhainistir Mhuire i mBaile Átha Troim sa bhliain 1540; go deimhin, tá baile fearainn den ainm Maudlin suite in aice an bhaile. Tá Maudlin lasmuigh de Cheanannas chomh maith agus sráid agus droichead den ainm céanna istigh sa bhaile sin. Luaitear ‘Magadalens gate’ i gCeanannas in Civil Survey na Mí, sa bhliain 1654–5.
Tá sampla eile fós den ainm seo sa Mhí, de réir dealraimh, nár thagair Lee dó san aiste s’aigesean: is é sin Moulden Bridge atá faoi bhun míle ó Ráth Tó. Tá an méid seo scríofa faoin droichead úd i Litreacha na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis: ‘the Maudling Bridge (Moulden Bridge in Name-Book): Every Easter Monday there used to be held “The Mauldings” or “Moudlens” as called by the people in common. They say it was “a great pattern” (patron), consisting of kicking football etc.’ Tagraítear in Medieval Religious Houses, Ireland do ‘leper hospital’ a bhí i Ráth Tó, ‘date unknown’. Is fada siar a théann ainm an droichid mar sin
