Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the round hill (drumlin) of the —
Ní cinnte bunús laíon anseo.D'fhéadfadh sé gur laíán (< laoghán), foirm dhíspeagtha de lao (< laogh) “calf”, atá ann ó cheart (féach www.dil.ie s.v. lóegán (< lóeg)) — ba bheag an difríocht idir laíán agus laíon sa chanúint fhíordhéanach ach bheifí ag súil le rian den -án san fhianaise luath más ea. Díol mór spéise mar sin an guta deiridh a chuirtear in iúl sa Commonwealth Survey (c. 1652), foinse a bhíonn dílis don Ghaeilge de ghnáth: ‘Cornelyena’; leg. ‘-lyane’, b’fhéidir. Ní bheadh ginideach iolra an fhocail laíon “pith” (FGB s.v.; eDIL s.v. láegan) róshásúil ó thaobh brí de.
Féach an míniú ag Gaeilgeoirí na háite le linn na Suirbhéireachta (‘na laoigheann ... caves’ [.i. ‘calves’] (1836)) agus cf. leis ‘It is also said that phantom calves used to be seen on the hillside’, blúire béaloidis a bhailigh An Scoláire Bocht ó mhuintir na háite i 1922 le haghaidh a cholúin san Anglo-Celt. Tá cuma na bréagshanasaíochta air seo agus ní heol dúinn aon sampla eile den fhoirm dhéanach den ghin. iol. *...na Laonna “of the calves” i logainm mar seo a théann siar go dtí an 16ú haois ar a laghad.
