Explanatory note
- English
Many of the references which have been included on the Logainm.ie web site under the entry Monaduff refer to a former placename which was located in the vicinity of Ballincurry townland. The historical examples that specifically refer to Monaduff are as follows, Manyduff? (dated 1602), Monyduffe (1716), Monaduff (1813), Mona dubh Irish spelling recorded by the Ordnance Survey topographical section (1838), as well as the contemporary local pronunciation which is similar to Monaduff. There are two syllables preceding duff / dubh in each of these examples. The vowel which is preserved in the second syllable (e.g. Mony—dated 1716 etc.) cannot be dismissed as meaningless. This excludes the Irish form postulated by MacGivney, Móin dubh. Therefore Muine Dubh, meaning ‘black thicket’, is a more likely origin – it is in conformity with the 1602 and 1716 spellings. (P. Ó Cearbhaill)
