Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the town of Mac Conmeá
Mac Conmeá (< Mac Con Meadha) — sloinne.

Forbairt dhéanach is ea -cl- in eilimint deiridh an logainm seo (1836 'Ballyclamay', etc.; cf. leis an bréagaistriúchán in 1813 'Clementstown'). Is féidir an fhorbairt a mhíniú mar seo a leanas: Baile Mhic Conmeá > 1606 'Ballivicknamae' (ar nós Conmara > Namara); rinneadh -cl- den charn -cn- trí chomhshamhlú le -l- an fhocail baile > Ballyclamay.

Baile Mhic Conmeá Íochtarach “lower Baile Mhic Conmeá” an t-ainm atá le feiscint in iontráil 1620 ‘Ballymickneneaeitra’ CPR.

  • English

    the town of Mac Conmeá
Mac Conmeá (< Mac Con Meadha) — sloinne.

The -cl- in the final element is a late development (1836 'Ballyclamay', etc.; cf. also the pseudotranslation in 1813 'Clementstown'). The development can be explained as follows: Baile Mhic Conmeá > 1606 'Ballivicknamae' (as Conmara > Namara); the cluster -cn- became -cl- through assimilation with the -l- of baile to give Ballyclamay.

Baile Mhic Conmeá Íochtarach “lower Baile Mhic Conmeá” is the name seen in the 1620 entry.
