"Pinkman: Áth-Dúine = Ford of the ‘dun’ or fort. Joyce gives Áth-Dúin for this name; O’Donovan tentatively, it would seem, Achadh-Dúin and Áth-Doimhing, deep ford. There is a small stream running along the west side of this townland, and there are some places along it where, quite conceivably, there may have been a ford that gave a name to the place. But making all allowance for physical changes it is not easy to see any places where there could be a ‘deep’ ford. All considered, I believe the second syllable of the English word represents Dún, a fort. There was a Dún there, and the site of it can still be traced."
