"Pinkman: Táimhleacht-a’-Bhaile = Plague burial ground of the town or townland. Taimhleacht is derived, according to O’Curry, from támh or taimh, a sudden or unnatural death, a plague, and leacht, a bed or a grave. It was a place where people who died from a plague or pestilence were buried, generally in a common grave. The term is of pagan origin and was not usually applied to a Christian cemetery. Sometimes the word was used to denote the spot, where a person met a sudden or violent death and where passers-by were accustomed to raise a ‘cairn’ by the addition of single stones. (O’Reilly dictionary). The first meaning is the one to be understood in this name and in the two following names. Compare Táimhleacht-Mhuintire – Parthalon, Annals of the Four Masters, Vol. I, page 9."
