"Pinkman: Cluain-Leamhchoill = Lawn or meadow of the elm-wood. The Ordnance Survey Map has two townlands named Cloonlaughil – one in the North and the other in the south of the parish of Gortletteragh. Both belonged formerly, as did the whole of the present Parish of Gortletteragh, to the ancient parish of Cloone. Curiously enough, in both cases, the name is made locally Clooneoghil, Cluain-eochoill, meadow of the yew wood. The local people never use Cloonlaughil and do not understand, if one uses this form. O’Donovan was aware of this, and, without any hesitation, characterised it as a local corruption. In this he was correct, I believe, as far as the name in the Northern end of the Parish is concerned. For the old Registry of Cloonmacnois writes the name of this townland Cluain-Lochuil and Cluain-Leamchoill. This Registry states that O’Ruairc bestowed 120 Irish acres of Cluain-Lochuill (with other lands from his territory) to Cloonmacnois as part payment that he and his heirs should
