Pinkman: "Achadh-Dearca = Field of the cave or hollow. Dearc means, primarily, the eye; in a secondary sense it is used to denote a cave, a cavern or a hollw. “Dearc .l. uagh nó uaimh”. (O’Cleary). This name is written on the Down Survey, Aghadearke. Hogan, Onomasticon, page 530, has “the battle of Magh Sleachta at Áth-Dearc, is Aghadark townland near and south of Ballymagauran in Co. Leitrim” – apparently identifying Áth-Dearc of Magh Sleacht with this townland in Co. Leitrim. But this is not correct, for Áth-Dearc is a different place and lies outside of Co. Leitrim. It has no connection with Aghadark, which lies on the west side of Ballinamore town. Aughedarkye, Fiant – Elizabeth 4786. “Dearc .l. uagh nó uaimh”. (O’Cleary)."
