Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the woods, wooded heights
Is giorrúchán é seo ar ainm níos faide atá le feiscint in 1563–1632 ach is deacair an cáilitheoir a dhéanamh amach go cinnte. Is féidir na móna “of the bog(land)” a chur as an áireamh, is dócha, toisc nach bhfuil aon phortach anseo; d’oirfeadh Rosa na Mant “the woods of the gaps (in hills)” don tírdhreach, b’fhéidir.
Mar leis an bhfuaim -sh- [ʃ] sa leagan Béarla den ainm mar réadú ar s-leathan na Gaeilge [s], féach go bhfuil samplaí eile againn dá leithéid, e.g. 1592c ‘Carrigenashe’ < Carraig an Easa (#34602) (ME), 1661 ‘Dorlishmore’ BSD < Durlas (#37331) (ME), 1591 ‘Dunrushe’ F 5567 < Dúras (#1166073) (Co), 1766 ‘Brainrish’ < An Bréanros (#30347) (Li), 1756 ‘the Cashin’, Cashen River SO < An Casán (#101087) (Ci), 1313 ‘Russhe’ < An Ros (#17008) (BÁC). Is cosúil go mbaineann an t-athrú fuaime seo leis an mBéarla (cf. Dobson ‘In widespread dialects … there is a tendency for [s] to become [ʃ]; it affects chiefly final [s] … seventeenth century ‘homophone’ lists … abase : abash … lace : lass : lash … kiss : Kish’ English Pronunciation II §373).
Gach seans go ndeachaigh an t-ainmfhocal Béarla rushes (.i. luachra) i bhfeidhm ar an logainm trí ionadaíocht, ar nós (An) Daingean > Dingle (focal Béarla a chiallaíonn gleanntán nó fothair).
