Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the corner, nook of the horses?
Tá éiginnteacht ag baint leis an ainm seo. Forbairt choitianta is ea cailliúint n- an ailt tar éis -l (cf. bf Cúil na nAbhall (#28819) sa pharóiste seo — forbairt rialta sa Ghaeilge is ea -(l)ln- > -ll-) ach mar sin féin bheifí ag súil le rian éigin den n- céanna sa 16ú haois. Léiríonn na tagairtí is luaithe cáilitheoir breise brik, brick(e), litriú a chuireann b(h)ric (ginideach/tabharthach uatha < breac “speckled”) in úil go hiondúil. Ach ní réitíonn leithéidí 1563 ‘Colenaghbrik’ in -agh- go rómhaith le *Cúil an Eich Bhric “the corner, nook of the speckled horse” ina bhfuil an cáilitheoir san uatha. (Cf. an béarlú 1567 ‘the sallo of the White Horse called Silloge-en-eighe gill’ < Saileog an Eich Ghil faoi bf Cloch Ghrianáin (#28869), agus cf. Poll an Eich Bhric > Pollaneghbrick (#1165058) “the hole, pool of the speckled steed” i Ros Comáin.)
