Explanatory note

the wood of An Crúiseach?
An Crúiseach — ón sloinne Crúis (< de Cruys na nAngla-Normannach)Níl bunús an cháilitheora cinnte.
Mórshloinne de chuid na Sean-Ghall ab ea Crúis (< de Cruys) ach níl sé luaite leis an gcuid seo den tír. Is léir nach é an t-ainmfhocal coitianta cros (áins./tabh. crois, gin. croise) “cross” atá anseo ar aon nós, agus cuirimid cill “church” as an áireamh mar aicmitheoir cheal iarsmaí eaglasta (www.archaeology.ie). Cf. b’fhéidir Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV (LG) s.n. Croase.
Tagraíonn 1549 ‘Ballyncaislan’, 1606 ‘Ballicasland’ < Baile an Chaisleáin “the town of the castle” don Chaisleán Nua in bf An Fearnán (#28846), is dócha.
