Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the wood of the field of Rian?
wood of (the) field of (the) path?Ní léir cé acu an t-ainm pearsanta Rian nó an t-ainmfhocal rian atá san eilimint deiridh.
Is deacair leaganacha béarlaithe de cill agus coill a idirdhealú uaireanta. Faightear défhoghar (~/əi/) sa dá fhocal seo araon i logainmneacha na háite seo (e.g. bf Coill tSaileoige (#28042) agus bf Cill Deilge (#28033) i bparóiste Achadh Bhó) agus gan amhras is fíorannamh is féidir brath ar ortagrafaíocht an Bhéarla i dtaobh chaoile nó leithne c- tosaigh na Gaeilge.
Ní mór mar sin dul i muinín leis an bhfianaise seandálaíochta. Deir an Corragánach ‘There was a church here in early times, but nothing remains to mark its site save a very small obsolete graveyard’, ach níl a rian seo le fáil san Fhardal Seandálaíochta. (Tá na tagairtí do na bailte fearainn sa bharúntacht seo darb ainm Béarla Kyle measctha sa leagan clóite den Fhardal Seandálaíochta; ní bhaineann leis an mbaile fearainn seo ach §5 ‘megalithic structure’ agus §462 ‘enclosure’; cf. www.archaeology.ie.) Moltar coill anseo. Cf. bf An Choill Bheag (#28710).
Mar leis an eilimint deiridh, ní féidir trian “third part; division, quarter” a chur as an áireamh.

Kyle. In ancient documents the townland appears as 'Kylgortrayn, in Gowley otherwise called Galmoy', 'Killgortraine' and 'Kilgurtrian', and in a will of 1733, as 'Kilegorthrean'. The Irish form of the name is evidently Coill guirt rathain...
