Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the top of the thicket
Tá portach in iarthuaisceart an bhaile fearainn; cf. ‘Bog’ léirithe anseo ar léarscáil an Down Survey (1665c). Dhealródh sé, ar fhoirmeacha ar nós 1790 ‘Barevona’, 1838 ‘Barrevunna’, gurb é an focal firinscneach muine atá sa dara heilimint.
Is cosúil ar an bhfoirm Ghaeilge i bpeann luaidhe 1838 ‘Bárr a mhuinge’ gur moinge an fuaimniú a bhí ar muine go háitiúil. Gach seans nach bhfuil anseo ach meascán idir muine “thicket” agus moing (gin. moinge) “rank vegetation, swamp”. Ach díol spéise go bhfuil samplaí eile againn de /nʹ/ na Gaeilge > /ŋʹ/ i gContae Laoise: bf Cluain Caoin > 1805 ‘Clonking’ (La 29, 30) (#27737), bf Gleann Doimhin > 1838 ‘Glen doy-ing’ (La 10, 11) (#28279), 1800c ‘don chearing’ [don cheithirn] (Litreacha na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis II 272).
