Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the ridge
An droim fada (2km) i ndeisceart bf Reary Beg, bf Drummond agus bf Ballygillaheen atá i gceist.Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Fearann an Ridire Dhuibh “the land of the black knight” an t-ainm eile atá le feiscint in iontrálacha 1622 ‘Ferringarduff’, 1638 ‘Farrenridderyduffe’, ‘Farrenridderiduffe’. Is truailliú ar an ainm seo atá in 1607/8 ‘Feran an muarreduiffe’ freisin ( var. lec. ‘Feran an Muaire Duiffe’ san AL faoi bf An Ghráinseach (#28346)) — leg. ‘Feran an Rudire Duiffe’. Is cosúil gur thagair sé do thalamh taobh thall den Bhearú ón Dromainn .i. cuid de bf Leacach Mór agus cuid de bf An Ghráinseach (cf. ‘westward of the said Bater leading [from Castle brake] to Mucluain … which land also is called Feran an muarreduiffe’ LS Uí Dhuinn 40–41).Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Léirítear dhá thóchar in oirthear an bhaile fearainn seo ar na sean-léarscáileanna, mar atá:- Ardnadrim Togher SO ag dul i dtreo Ardnadrim SO < Ard na Dromainne (??) “the height of An Dromainn” agus
- Derringowan Togher SO ag dul i dtreo Derringowan SO < Doire an Ghabhann “the (oak-)wood of the smith”.
De réir an Fhardail Seandálaíochta (www.archaeology.ie) ní mhaireann aon iarsmaí díobh agus tá dhá bhóthar nua ann ina n-ionad sa lá atá inniu ann. - Léirítear Lough Kathaleen SO < Loch Caitlín “the lake of Caitlín (ainm pearsanta)” i lár an bhaile fearainn. (Cf. an béarlú ar eas Eas Chaitlín/Cathaleen’s Fall (#111066) i dTír Chonaill, cf. 1960c /ˈkurə xat̪ʹɪˈlʹiːnʹ/ faoi b Cora Chaitlín (#6418) i gContae an Chláir). Is cosúil go bhfuil an loch seo tráite anois (www.osi.ie).
- Ní heol dúinn aon tagairt stairiúil do Steel’s Well SO.
