Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the hillock of ivy
Is cosúil gur réadú ar -ch /x/ deiridh na Gaeilge atá le sonrú sa tagairt is luaithe dá dtagann anuas chugainn, 1735 ‘Knockaninagh’, agus gur imigh an fhuaim seo as an leagan béarlaithe den ainm faoin 19ú haois.
Ach féach gurbh ann don chnuasainm eidhneach “ivy-bushes” — réiteodh Cnoc an Eidhnigh “the hill of the ivy-bushes” leis an bhfianaise chomh maith (cf. www.dil.ie s.v. eidnech).
