Explanatory note

low-lying land beside a river
Baile fearainn mór é seo (1442 acra SO) sa chuid thiar thuaidh den cheathrúin darbh ainm Móinteach Mílic (cf. 1608 ‘half quarter of Milicke’, 1618 ‘Milick, being half a quarter in Moyntagh Meelick), i dteorainn le paróiste Raoire Mór.
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Tá tagairtí sna foinsí do roinnt logainmneacha sa limistéar seo (m.sh. faoi 1622 ‘the manor of Rossenolis’ CPR 552a), mar atá:- 1622 ‘the wood of Killmilcke … ’ LS Uí Dhuinn 111, 1622 ‘Kiltemeelick alias Kilmalick’ CPR 522a < Coill(te) Mhílic “the wood(s) of Míleac”. Féach an malartú coill/coillte sa mhionainm Coill na Greallcha/Coillte Greallach faoi bf Baile Mhic Ruairí (#28671).
- 1607/8 ‘Ardaragh meyle’, 1608/9 ‘Ardarraghmoyle … ard darach moile’ 75, 1609 ‘Ardarraghmoyle’ CPR 123, 1660c ‘Meelick, Garrifollan, Ardraghmoyle & Garriconnogh’ BSD < Ard Darach Maoile “height of (the) bald oak-tree”, in bf Doire (#28543) b’fhéidir.
- 1595 ‘Ite 7 Conmaithe’ (?) (cf. 1608/9), 1607 ‘Garroconoughe’, ‘Garricanochoe’, ‘Garruoragh’, 1608/9 ‘Garrycoacha alias Garryconghe … garri co[mh]c(..)’ (léann Price ‘garri coñic([s]o)’ — leg. litriú foghrúil ‘garri conn(a)cho’, b’fhéidir), 1609 ‘Garichoucha or Garicough’, 1612 ‘Gary Donogh’, 1617 ‘Garryconough’, ‘Garriconagha’, 1660c ‘Garriconnogh’, 1662 ‘Garryconnagh’, srl. < Garraí Mhic Dhonncha (?) “the garden of Mac Donncha (sloinne)”; féach 1654 ‘McDonnogh’ i measc na bpríomhshloinnte sa bharúntacht seo (Cen. 506). Ní léir an truailliú air seo atá in 1823 ‘Derrylough’ TAB, 1841 Derry Lough SO, fo-bhaile i lár an bhaile fearainn (.i. < * Garryknough). Níl sé as an áireamh ar fad gur bréagaistriúchán ar na foirmeacha déanacha béarlaithe seo atá in ainm an bhaile fearainn teorantaigh bf Nutgrove.
- 1595 ‘…feudi na Sgethi Cuirrthe’ [gin.], 1622 ‘Skahorann’ CPR 560, 1622 ‘Skahorane’ CPR 552, 1627 ‘Skahan’, 1639 ‘Skahorane’ < An Sceach Chorr (?) “the odd/round whitethorn, thornbush” (más féidir brath ar an tagairt Ghaeilge), nach léir suíomh dó.
- 1593 ‘Fearay hi Christin’, 1593 ‘Feran Christen’, 1622 ‘Farrenchristen’, 1607 ‘Ferren hucristinne’, 1607/8 ‘FerranehiChristine’, 1608 ‘fearan hychristine’, 1639 ‘Farrechristen’, 1662 ‘Ferrenchristen’ < Fearann (Mhic) Cristín “the land of (Mac) Cristín” ina bhfuil leagan gaelaithe den sloinne gallda Christian le fáil, is dócha. Cf. 1824 ‘Richd. Christian, Naughvalle’ (bar. an tSráidbhaile), 1825 ‘John Christian, Ballyshanduff’ (bar. Phort na hInse), 1825 ‘Richd. Christian, Monescreban’ (bar. Bhaile Adaim) i Leabhar na nDeachúna. Cf. bf Baile Mhic Criostail (#42228) i nGéisill, Contae Uíbh Fhailí, 13km soir ó thuaidh uaidh seo.
