Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the wooded height of the decay, withering?
‘Talamh ard (coillteach), coill, ceann tíre’ an réimse bríonna atá leis an bhfocal ros. Dhealródh sé gur minicí an bhrí ‘talamh ard (coillteach)’ leis sa taobh seo tíre, mar atá sa bhaile fearainn seo. Cf. bf An Ros (#27887).
Réiteodh 1566 ‘Rossecreyne’ agus 1601 ‘Roskryny’ le Ros an Chríonaigh “the wood of the brushwood”; cf. bbf An Críonach (Ca), bbf An Críonach (Li), bf Críonach (Lo). D’fhéadfadh sé mar sin go ndearnadh atuiscint ar an logainm i rith an 17ú haois. Cf. bf Cúil na Críne (PL) (#50047) < crín “anything old or withered” (FGB).
Is minic críon “withered, decayed”, agus focail atá díorthaithe uaidh, le fáil i dteannta focal a thagraíonn do choillte: e.g. bbf An Choill Chríon (CC; Ci; Mu), bf An Choillidh Chríon (Mu), bf Coillte Críona (Sl), bbf Críonchoill (AM; CC; Mu; UF), bf Doirín an Chríonaigh (Co), bf An Garrán Críon (Ga).
Suite le hais bf Ros na Dúiche (#28541).
