Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Is aistriúchán í an fhoirm Ghaeilge.
B’fhéidir gur díreach ón logainm Lamerton (< SBh. lamb + burna + tūn) “farmstead on (the) lamb(-washing) stream” in Devon, Sasana, a tháinig ainm an tí mhóir a sheas anseo, nó neachtar acu ón sloinne a dhíorthaigh ón logainm céanna (féach www.archaeology.ie; Mills, Dictionary of English Place-Names 202; cf. ‘the stream is still called Lumburn’, Cottle, Dictionary of Surnames s.n. Lamerton). Féach leis go bhfuair an plandóir Thomas Lamden tailte i Laois sa 16ú haois; cf. ‘Ann Cosby … godmothers Mrs. Pigott and Mrs. Lambkin’ (Cosby, Laois: History and Society 321, 323 — ba leis na Piogóidigh an baile fearainn seo idir chamáin an uair úd agus bhí talamh ag Cosby ó dheas). Pé ar domhan de, fágtar Lamberton gan aistriú anseo.
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Taobh istigh de limistéirí bf Lamberton Demesne an lae inniu bhí dhá bhaile fearainn stairiúla a raibh a n-ainmneacha in úsáid anuas go dtí lár an 17ú haois, mar atá
(a) 1551 ‘Monnenenawen’, 1557 ‘Mollyneknawe’, 1562 ‘Mollenneknawor’, 1605 ‘Mennegnave’, 1607 ‘Mullinneknaw’, 1660c ‘Munnenagnane’ < Muine (nó Mullaigh) na gCnámh (?) “the thicket/summit of the bones” agus
(b) 1551 ‘Kilcromyn’, 1607 ‘Kilcromen’, 1608 ‘Kilcromen’, 1654 ‘Kilcromine’, 1660c ‘Killcramyne’ < Coill Chroimín (?) “the wood of Croimín (ainm pearsanta)/of the crooked feature”.Is deacair anois suíomh beacht an dá shean-fhoroinn seo a leagan amach go cinnte, áfach. (Mar bharr ar an doiléire is cosúil ar an gcur síos ar theorainneacha thailte an Phiogóidigh in 1608 atá le fáil in CPR 112–113 go raibh bf Baile Uí Ghormaíle Thuaidh (#28118) an lae inniu, chomh maith le bf Lamberton Demesne, san áireamh sa dá shean-logainm seo.) Caolseans go bhfuil gaol ag 1608 ‘the wood of Corogheknaveagh’ i gcló in CPR 113 leis an logainm réamhráite X na gCnámh. Mionainm é seo a thagair do choillte thuas ar an gcnoc ar imeall thiar theas bf Lamberton Demesne.
Is dócha gurb é an paiste beag riascach sa chúinne thoir theas den bhaile fearainn ar imeall bf Baile Uí Ghormaíle Theas a bhí i gceist le 1608 ‘the gut of Loughnemuckie’ CPR < Loch na Muice “the lake of the pig” trína ritheadh teorainn theas thailte an Phiogóidigh ar feadh Shruthán an Bhealaigh anoir.
Leanadh an teorainn ar aghaidh trí ‘the middle of the wood of Barnegrenan’ CPR (< Bearna an Ghrianáin (?) “the gap of the eminent place”, murab amhlaidh gurb ionann is ‘Boneslevane’ thíos) ar imeall theas an bhaile fearainn go dtí an cúinne thiar theas. D’fhéadfadh sé gur tagairt don ghort sa choirnéal seo a bhfuil imfhálú ann (www.osi.ie) is ea 1608 ‘the close or croft of Cooleroyny’ CPR (< Cúil Raithní “the corner, nook of the ferns”, murab amhlaidh gur míléamh ar ‘-rahin’, le heireabaill ar an -h- agus ar an -n, is dócha) < Cúil an Ráithín (?) “the corner, nook of the (little) ring-fort” atá ann).
Ansin chasadh an teorainn ó thuaidh trí ‘the wood of Boneslevane’ < Bun Sleamháin (?) “bottomland of (the) elm-tree” (cf. bf Tuaim an tSleamháin (#28189)) i dtreo choillte ‘Corogheknaveagh’ thuasluaite. Ar bharra an chnoic a bhí ‘a thorn called Skeagharete’ (leg. ‘-arde’?) < An Sceach Ard “the tall hawthorn” (cf. 1654 ‘Skeighardtele’, ‘Skeighardetegle’ < Sceach Ard — “the tall hawthorn of —” (tá an tríú mír doiléir) ar theorainneacha an tSráidbhaile in CS X 21).
Bhí an baile fearainn seo suite ar imeall thiar theas Fhearann Ó Leathlobhair agus tá sé ar theorainn trí bharúntachta an lae inniu, mar atá Port Laoise Thiar agus Thoir lastuaidh agus Cuileannach laisteas. Crois Uí Dhuibh/Croshy Duff (#1419165) ab ainm don chnoc coigríche anseo.
