the hermitage
< Díseart Aonghais (#1433)Tá cur síos in www.archaeology.ie ar an láthair eaglasta i ndeisceart an bhaile fearainn seo, a bhí luaite le hAonghas Céile Dé. Féach ainm an pharóiste (#1433).
I lár an bhaile fearainn tá fothracha chaisleán an Phiogóidigh (cf. 1563c ‘C.pigot’ ar shean-léarscáil Cotton), ainmnithe ón bplandóir Sasanach a fuair tailte anseo (cf. inter alia F (Eilíse) 496, CPR 112b). Tá cuntas ag Ó Mealláin ar conas mar ar gabhadh an baile seo i Meán Fómhair na bliana 1646: ‘don Disiort’ an fhoirm den logainm atá aige agus ‘ar in bPicéadach’, ‘in Picéadach’ an leagan Gaeilge a bhí aige ar an sloinne (Ollscoil Chorcaí LS 3 41, 42 ar www.isos.ie).Mionainmneacha:
- I ndeisceart an bhaile fearainn tá cnoc beag aolcharraige darb ainm Carrigmael SO (c. 200m) < An Charraig Mhaol (?) “the bare rock” (‘Karstified limestone bedrock at surface’ ar na cnoic seo go léir www.epa.ie; féach faoi bf Cúil na Carraige (#28488)).
- Ní léir bunús an mhionainm Comorogue SO atá léirithe ar an talamh íseal ag bun na gcnoc in oirdheisceart an bhaile fearainn — Com na Ruag “the hill-recess, hollow of the routs”, b’fhéidir, nó An Chomaróg “the small confluence”?
- Bhailigh Liam Price an mionainm ‘Kyle na Grauawn or Groun’ anseo. D’aithin an Príseach é seo mar thruailliú nó atuiscint ar an logainm stairiúil 1549 ‘Kylnebrone’ Carrigan MS, 1551 ‘Kilnebron’ F, 1557 ‘Kyllebroue’, 1607 ‘Keilnebrone’ Inq. Lag., 1608 ‘Kilnebrone’ CPR 113 < Coill/Cill na Brón “the wood, the church of the quern(-stone)” (?) (féach 1608 ‘Coolkey [.i. oirthear bf Hophall (#28491)] and Kilnebrone’). Cf. an mionainm Kylenabrone i nGleann an Smóil, Co. Bhaile Átha Cliath (#1410944). D'fhéadfaí cill “church; graveyard” a chur san áireamh sa chéad eilimint ós sa chuid thiar theas seo den bhaile fearainn atá seanreilig agus seanteampall an pharóiste.
- Tá Moanavaw Bog SO (#1419171) ar imeall thiar thuaidh an bhaile fearainn.
