Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the corner, nook of the rock?
Tá cuma thrédhearcach go leor ar Coolnacarrick mar logainm agus glacaimid leis anseo mar bhéarlú ar Cúil na Carraige (nó b’fhéidir cúl “back (of hill)”), ainm a bheadh oiriúnach do shuíomh an bhaile fearainn. Mar sin féin tá an fhianaise an-ghann agus ní féidir a bheith cinnte faoi bhunús an ainm. Thagair an logainm stairiúil 1608 ‘Coolecreighie’, et var., d’achar mór talún taobh thoir den chnoc in bf Hophall (#28491). Nuair a tosnaíodh ar an ainm nua Hophall a úsáid ar an áit laistiar is ea a thagann an t-ainm seo Coolnacarrick chun solais thoir (1740 ‘Coulerih otherwise Hophall’ CGn.; 1752 ‘Coolnecarrig’ CGn.). Caolseans go bhfuil an dá ainm gaolmhar le chéile.
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
- Léirítear Hewson Hill SO ar theorainn bf An Díseart (#28490) lastuaidh. Cf. ‘Generals Heuson and Reynolds of the Parliamentary Army, who are credited with blowing up Dunamase Castle in 1650, after it was occupied briefly by Ó Néill’ (Hyland, Ossory, Laois & Leinster 3 195), eachtra a thug ainm do Cromwell’s Lines SO in bf Baile Uí Chearúill (#28298), 3km slí soir ó thuaidh uaidh seo. Is iad an bheirt chéanna a bhí luaite le Boheravurder SO < Bóthar an Mhurdair “the road of the murder” i mbéaloideas na háite (féach nóta faoi par Tigh Mochua (#1436)).
- Ar leirg thoir theas an chnoic in oirthuaisceart an bhaile fearainn, tá Tobernamuck SO < Tobar na Muc “the well of the pigs”.
Ainmneacha eile:
D’aimsigh Liam Price mionainm eile anseo .i. ‘Coish Eair’ (tá nótaí an Phrísigh i seilbh an Bhrainse Logainmneacha). Luann Mac Cába sampla eile ‘Cosh-hear … a rough kind of grass’ in bf Baile Uí Chionga (#27789). San fhoirm Cosheer/Causheer tá an t-ainm seo an-chomónta mar pháircainm i gCúige Laighean. Is é ‘caitheamh siar … land left fallow for a season after being reclaimed’ a bhunús dar le O’Kelly, Kilkenny: A History of the County 6, agus is é cas siar “corn-land, etc., allowed to lapse into grass” leagan Gaeilge an Duinnínigh (cf. Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV s.n. Cosher).
