Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the forest
Is deas an sampla béarlaithe é 1607 ‘the Forest woodd alias Kayllnifarase’ < Coill na Foraoise “the wood of the forest”. (Brí amháin a mheastar a bheith ag foraís in www.dil.ie ná “region, place” chomh maith le “forest”.) Tá foirm Ghaeilge againn a scríobhadh go gairid ina dhiaidh sin .i. 1608/9 ‘O Doynes Forest … an fhoraois’. Tá an dá bhaile fearainn seo suite ar theorainn trí bharúntachta sa lá atá inniu ann, Tigh na hInse (.i. Uí Riagáin) thiar agus Port na hInse agus An Daingean Uachtarach (.i. Clann Mhaoilíora) thoir. Cuid den mhórcheantar Uí Fhailghe iad na dúichí seo agus ní bhaineadar le Laoighis. Ní fada ó dheas atá an teorainn le barúntacht Phort Laoise Thiar, mar a bhfaighimid an logainm bf Foraois Uí Mhóra (#28593) — d’fhéadfadh sé go seasadh an leagan fada Béarla den ainm seo idir chamáin, 1593 ‘O’Doynes Forest’ (in Uí Riagáin), i gcodarsnacht le leithéid 1660 ‘O Moores fforest’ (i Laois Uí Mhóra).
Tá an défhoghar /~əi/ san fhocal coill le sonrú go soiléir in 1607 ‘Kayllnifarase’. Cf. Ó Crualaoich, Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV (LG) s.n. Kyle (par. Templeshanbo), mar a bpléitear an fhianaise logainmníochta ar fhoghrú cill agus coill i gCúige Laighean.
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
Léirítear dornán maith mionainmneacha anseo ar na léarscáileanna. Derryisheen Wood SO an t-aon cheann díobh ar traslitriú é ar ainm Gaeilge < Doire Oisín (?) “the (oak-)wood of Oisín (ainm pearsanta)”.
