Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    the little rock?
    < cairthín

Ní cinnte an ionann é seo agus an logainm stairiúil 1100c ‘o Chorthíne’, 1400c ‘o Ath Coirthine’, mar a mheas an Donnabhánach. Measann Ó Murchadha gur thagair an seanainm úd do bf, par Aharney (#27760, #1256) i gClár Maí Locha (Laois: History and Society 40; FSÁG I Áth Coirthíne, FSÁG VI Coirthíne: ach 1494 ‘Hacharna’, 1606 ‘A naith charrna’, srl. = Aharney ). Ó thaobh na teangeolaíochta de ar aon nós, réiteodh na foirmeacha béarlaithe a fheicimid anseo go maith leis an bhfocal Gaeilge céanna .i. coirthín (< cairthín < cairthe “rock”). Iarracht de ghuta cúnta sa charn /-rh-/ a thug an mhalairt foirme Béarla Curraghane, is cosúil.
