Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the black swath?
Faightear an-éagsúlacht foirmeacha stairiúla i logainmneacha a bhfuil srath/sraith iontu, agus is cosúil go raibh meascán uaireanta sa Ghaeilge féin. Pléann Ó Crualaoich an cheist seo in Logainmneacha na hÉireann IV (LG) s.v. Ballynastraw. Réiteodh cuid de na tagairtí luatha anseo, m.sh. 1593 ‘Sraghaduffe’, 1607 ‘Shraghduffe’, le srath in -th leathan deiridh (fuaimnithe mar a bheadh -ch /x/ sa chanúint). Ní léir abhainn ná sruthán anseo a bheadh oiriúnach don bhrí “river-meadow, holm”; tá an talamh maith suite lastuaidh de phortach, áfach.
Cf. bf Tigh na Srath (#28823) i Sliabh Mairge, bf An Srath (#28101) i gClár Maí Locha.
