the ring-fort of the derelict enclosure?
maoilis < maol + liosNí dóigh linn gurb é an t-ainm pearsanta Mílis (< Miles na nAngla-Normannach) atá sa cháilitheoir anseo (cf. bf Ráth Laoisigh “the ring-fort of Laoiseach” lena ais laistiar), mar gur cosúil go gcuireann na foirmeacha stairiúla m-leathan in iúl. (Féach an chodarsnacht idir seo agus 1624 ‘Ballymeelish alias Ballyvillis’, 1655 ‘Ballyvielis’ < bf Baile Mhílis (#28717) i gClann Donncha.) Sin é a thugann orainn an comhfhocal maoilis < maol “bald, derelict” + lios a mholadh (cf. bf Maoilis (#30586) i Luimneach). Tá cur síos san Fhardal Seandálaíochta ar an imfhálú (www.archaeology.ie).
Maidir le struchtúr an logainm, cf. bf Ráth Lis “the ring-fort of the enclosure” (#27752) i gCuileannach (tá cuma an athluaiteachais air sa lá atá inniu ann, ach féach www.dil.ie s.vv. 2 ráth, ráith agus 2 les).
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
- 1802 ‘Rathmiles or Windmill Hill’, 1841 Windmill Hill SO (féach faoi bf Baile Briotáis (#28286).
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
- In oirthuaisceart an bhaile fearainn seo agus, is cosúil, isteach in bf Ballycarroll a bhí an áit darbh ainm 1518 ‘Pollagh Balnoy 20 acres’ Kildare Rental (cuid de ‘Gaydonsland’), 1540c ‘villata de la Pollagh 20 acres’ Crown Survey , 1568/9 ‘Pullaghballenowe’ F, 1575 ‘Le Pollagh de le Newton, alias Pollaghballinowe?’ JKAS 339, 1582 ‘Pullaghballenowe’ F, 1617 ‘Pollaugh, a half plowland; occupier, Owen O’Beghan; lying east from the said land of Rathlish and Rathmolis; and meareth south upon the land of Ballynowlorde’ Inq. (Fitzgerald) (cf. 1805 ‘Bally Knowlard’ Cahill léirithe thuas ar Windmill Hill SO; 1617 ‘Ballecharrelle and Derrinifinsin … lying north from the said town of Pollaugh’ Inq. (Fitzgerald)), 1666 ‘Poulagh alias Carrolsby’ ASE 84, 1695 ‘Powlags’ Inq. Lag. < An Pollach “the place of holes” < Pollach an Bhaile Nua “the Pollach of An Baile Nua” an leagan fada de — ainm eile ar an mbaile caisleáin in bf Lé (#28503) ab ea An Baile Nua. Féach Pollach eile faoi bf Cúil an tSúdaire (#28602). Ainm comónta cois na bportach sa dá bharúntacht thuaidh seo is ea pollach “place of holes”.
