Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
shaking place, quaking bog
Ní léirítear aon phortach ar léarscáileanna na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis anseo (www.osi.ie) ach tá an talamh in oirthear agus i ndeisceart an bhaile fearainn gléireach móinteach de réir léarscáil na Gníomhaireachta um Chaomhnú Comhshaoil (‘Peaty gleys’, www.epa.ie).
Is cosúil ar fhianaise an 17ú haois, m.sh. 1669 ‘Cryhallegh’, gur cailliúint -th- /h/ láir is cúis leis an nguta fada san fhuaimniú déanach Gaeilge 1838 ‘Craoileach’. Is í *croithleach > *croithileach (le guta cúnta) > *croíleach an fhorbairt atá le tuiscint anseo, b’fhéidir (cf. bf Cnoc an Chatha (#28738)).
Tá leaganacha eile den logainm seo le fáil ar fud na tíre, m.sh.bf Crithligh (TE), bf Croithligh (Ca), bf Creathlach (LG), bf Croithlí (DG), bf Croithleán (ME).
