Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the stony place
An talamh cois srutháin ar theorainn thoir an bhaile fearainn a thug ainm don áit (feach meascán de ‘Limestone sands and gravels’, ‘Alluvium … gravelly’, ‘Lithosols’, srl., www.epa.ie).
Taispeánann an fhoirm áitiúil 1838 ‘Cloizhaun … r slender nearly like z’ an foghar /ʒ/ (mar atá in je na Fraincise) ar r-caol, saintréith de chanúint Ghaeilge Osraí (féach Ó Caoimh in LSO I 1 faoi par. Achadh Bhó (#1412)). Díol spéise go raibh sé le clos san ainm an uair úd.
Tabhair faoi deara gur fianaise indíreach í seo go raibh an -ch- caol in cloich- balbh ar fad san ainm Gaeilge. Dá mba ann d’aon rian d’fhoghar -ch- caol mar /xʹ/, /h/, dhéanfadh sin an r-caol /ʒ/ a dhíghlórú go dtí /ʃ/ agus bheifí ag súil le fuaimniú ar nós *Cloiseán (cf. bóithrín /boːˈʃiːnʹ/, LASID II); féach gur /ʃ/ atá sa logainm sa lá atá inniu ann. Tá cailliúint -ch leathan deiridh /x/ in cloch agus fadú go dtí cló le sonrú san fhianaise dhéanach ar roinnt logainmneacha dar céadeilimint cloch sa mhórcheantar seo (m.sh. bf Cloch Lathaí (#28774) agus cuid mhaith de na logainmneacha dar céadeilimint Cloch in CC, Ce, LG, srl.).
