the ring-fort
giorrúchán < Ráth Chill ChaoideDe réir an Chorragánaigh bhí teampall san áit seo (cé nach gcuirtear síos ar a leithéid, ná ar na ‘sites of three dismantled raths’ a luann sé, san Fhardal Seandálaíochta (www.archaeology.ie)). D’fhéadfadh sé go bhfuil an ceart aige nuair a thuairimíonn gur Ráth Chill Chaoide “the ring-fort of Cill Chaoide (Caoide — ainm pearsanta)” an seanainm atá le feiscint in iontrálacha an 17ú haois (cf. History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 109). Cf. par Domhnach Caoide (TE) (#63191), par Cill Chaoide (Cl) (#436) agus par Cill Chaoide (Lm) (#1562).
An Ráth Ard “the high ring-fort” an t-ainm atá le feiscint in 1838 ‘Rathard’ (cf. ‘rising ground over the river, known as Rath hill’, History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 109).
