Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the town of Ó Cionga?
Ó Cionga — sloinneNíl an sloinne seo róchoitianta. Tá corrshampla den sloinne King le fáil sa chuid seo den chontae in Griffith’s Valuation, áfach. Féach na tagairtí do ‘Henry Kinge of Culkillin in Upper Ossory’ i gcáipéis dlí de chuid Mhic Giolla Phádraig Osraí dar dáta 1587, atá in eagar ag David Edwards in Ossory, Laois and Leinster 4 24–5. Deir Edwards gurbh é ‘the local historian and genealogist Henry King, alias Éinrí Ó Cionga … one of the local family of genealogists or seanchaidhe’ a bhí ann (ibid.). Cf. leis 1638c ‘Connor Kinge de Ballegorvel’ < Conchúr Ó Cionga (?) a bhí mar fhinné ar ghníomhas in Inq. Lag. 38 Car. I a bhain le Mac Giolla Phádraig freisin (cf. leis Inq. Lag. 24 Car. I).
Réiteodh an fhianaise luath in -nn agus an fhorbairt go -ng le cinn (gin. < ceann “head”), b’fhéidir, ach ní heol dúinn aon sampla eile de *Baile (an) C(h)inn.
