Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Fágtar Haywood gan aistriú; logainm Sasanach is ea é a chiallaíonn ‘coill imfhálaithe’. Bhí an sloinne a eascraíonn as an logainm céanna le fáil i measc na Sean-Ghall freisin: cf. bf Ballyhade (#25005) (CD 40).
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
Is cosúil ar na seanfhoinsí gur anseo a bhí an sruthán 1549 ‘Glaishcroghan’, 1561 ‘brook of Glasshicrohan’. De réir an Chorragánaigh thugadh muintir na háite lena linn idir Deesheen agus Gzheesheen ar an nglaise a ritheann tríd an mbaile fearainn seo aduaidh go dtí Baile na Coille (History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 384). Tuairimíonn sé gurb ionann an sruthán seo agus 1546 ‘Glaishcroghan’, srl., agus gur fhoirm dhíspeagtha de críoch “boundary” is bunús leis an ainm. Ach níl an t-ionannú seo cinnte; cuir 1549 ‘Glaishcroghan’ i gcomparáid leis an logainm stairiúil 1150c ‘Cill Crochain i cocrich Laigsi & Ossairgi’ [‘Cill Crochain i gcoigrích Laoise agus Osraí’] i Leabhar Laighean (cf. bf Cill Chrónáin (#27772)).Pé ar domhan de, má tá an fhoirm Gzheesheen [< An Grísín (?) cf. abh An Ghrís (CD, CM)] cruinn ag an gCorragánach, díol spéise an fhuaim -zh- < r-caol le fáil i mionainm taobh amuigh d'Osraí — cé go bhfuil an baile fearainn seo díreach lastuaidh de theorainn na dúiche úd dar ndóigh.
