Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
An Fosadh
the halting-place, encampment?Réadú ar -dh /ð/ atá le feiscint sa litriú 1205 ‘Fosseth’. D’imigh an fhuaim seo as an nGaeilge faoin 14ú haois. Féach FGB, Dinneen s.v. fosadh agus www.dil.ie s.v. fosad. B’fhéidir go bhfuil an t-alt léirithe i bhfoirm 1606 ‘Parkefoss’ < Páirc an Fhosaidh (?). Tá logainm i gCiarraí a bhfuil fianaise ar úsáid an ailt leis: féach ‘Cnocán an Fhosaidh’ faoi bf An Fosadh (Ci) (#23499). Cf. bf Gráig an Fhosaidh
Tigh Mochua
the (religious) house of Mochua
Mochua — ainm ceana naoimhCrónán an naomh atá i gceist le Mochua anseo, de réir dealraimh (cf. bf Cill Chrónáin (#27772)).
Ainmneacha stairiúla:
- Ar léarscáil 1563 tugtar ‘Feranoprior’ < Fearann an Phrióra “the land of the priory” ar an gceantar seo (cf. foirm na bliana 1568). Cf. Fearann na Manach “the land of the monks” faoi bf Diméin Mhainistir Laoise (#27730).
Mionainmneacha ar an léarscáil:
- Maidir le Boheravurder SO < Bóthar an Mhurdair “the road of the murder” ar imeall thuaidh an bhaile fearainn, dar le muintir na háite in 1838 ‘friars dwelt in the abbey of Timahoe until the year 1650 when Colonels Hewson and Reynolds … murdered all the friars of this abbey and dismantled their house. The place where they were massacred is still called Boher a wurther or murdering road’ (Litreacha na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis I 278–9; cf. bf Baile Uí Chearúill (#28298) agus bf Cúil na Carraige (#28488)). Díol spéise an malartú idir w- agus v- i dtosach an fhocail deiridh; dhealródh sé gur ghné suntasach de chanúint Ghaeilge Achadh Bhó in iardheisceart an chontae ab ea mh-/bh- leathan tosaigh a fhuaimniú mar /v/ i gcónaí (cf. Litreacha na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis I 1 faoi par Achadh Bhó (#1412)).

The name seems an anglicising of the Irish word Fásach, a wilderness though such a name is not now applicaple to the Townland in which the old Church stands.
