Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the town of Áth an Róine
Áth an Róine “the ford of the —”Ní léir bunús an eilimint deiridh — d’fhéadfadh sé go bhfuil baint aige le ruainne nó róinne “(animal-)hair, fishing-line” (féach www.dil.ie s.v. rúainne agus róinne). Tá an leagan oifigiúil Gaeilge bunaithe ar thagairt i Leabhar Laighean ón 15ú haois .i. ‘Conall mac Dabith Hi Morda ... dorighne caislean Baile Atha Inroine’ (‘presumably the man who died in 1348, though the genealogy of the O’Moores is extremely hazardous’ O’Sullivan, Celtica VII 4 .i. seachas 1493 ‘Ua Mordha Conall mac Dauidh do mharbhadh’ ARÉ).
Maidir le tús an ainm, tá roinnt samplaí eile againn de logainmneacha dár tús áth ar cuireadh an eilimint baile rompu ón 15ú haois amach (m.sh. Baile Átha Cliath (BÁC), Baile Átha Luain (IM), Baile Átha Í (CD)). Sa chás seo idir chamáin is léir gurbh ann don mhalairt foirme Béal Átha an Róine “the approach to Áth an Róine” chomh maith: féach 1549 ‘Biellaroyne’, 1563 ‘Bealarone’. Tá an mhír béal “mouth, approach” an-choitianta roimh áth-ainmneacha freisin (e.g. Béal Átha Conaill (Ca), Béal Átha Seanaidh (DG), Béal Átha hAmhnais (ME)). Cloíodh leis an bhfoirm Ghaeilge i Leabhar Laighean ar an gceist seo freisin.
