Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
Tá fianaise ar an bhfoirm Ghaeilge seo burgáiste, ar iasacht é ón mBéarla, le fáil i roinnt logainmneacha. Tagann burgage / burgáiste le múnla iasachtaí eile ón mBéarla nó ó theangacha Rómánsacha, mar shampla college / coláiste, mortgage / morgáiste, cabbage / cabáiste. Féach leis an mionainm ‘Gortmore-na-Burgasty’ < Gort Mór na Burgáiste, Co. Luimnigh, atá le fáil in Calendar of Patent Rolls 253.
- English
There is evidence for the Irish form burgáiste, which was borrowed from English, in a number of Irish placenames. Burgage / Burgáiste follows the pattern of other loan words from Romance languages or English, such as college / coláiste, mortgage / morgáiste, cabbage / cabáiste. Compare the anglicised Limerick placename ‘Gortmore-na-Burgasty’ < Gort Mór na Burgáiste found in Calendar of Patent Rolls 253.
