Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
the ridge of the black ford
Níl an fhoirm oifigiúil Béarla a socraíodh sna 1840í dílis don bhunainm Gaeilge, agus is amhlaidh go bhfuil sí bunaithe ar an litriú Béarlaithe is sine dá maireann, .i. 'Dromduffane' (1618). Is dócha ar fhoirmeacha stairiúla eile agus ar an bhfuaimniú áitiúil, áfach, gur míléamh nó mílitriú é seo féin ar 'Dromduffaue' nó ar 'Dromduffaw' - English
the ridge of the black ford
The official English form adopted in the 1840s is not reflective of the original Irish name, and in fact it appears to be based on the earliest surviving anglicized spelling, i.e. 'Dromduffane' (1618). However, it is probable, judging from other historical examples and from the local pronunciation, that this form is itself a misreading or a mis-spelling for 'Dromduffaue' or 'Dromduffaw'
