"Barrett's castle near Mourne Abbey ... in 1600 this was a Geraldine castle ... even though it bordered on the lands of the Barretts it was never occupied by them until purchased by Andrew Barrett in the second decade of the 17th century. The original builders of the castle were the de Cogans from whom the Earl of Desmond acquired it in 1439."
