Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Srúibh Brain ‘headland of (the) raven’ or ‘the headland of Bran’

  • English

Srúibh Brain ‘headland of (the) raven’ or ‘the headland of Bran’

In Irish literary tradition the hero Cú Chulainn hunted a flock of birds in the vicinity of Srúibh Brain, and placed on an old rock the beak of the last raven killed. Bran was used as a man’s name but was originally a common noun meaning ‘raven’; srúbh means ‘a point of land’ in a figurative usage of its original sense ‘a beak, bill’. Thus the tale explains the placename Srúibh Brain as ‘raven’s bill’. In some versions of the tale, the place is specified as being in West Munster, i.e. Srón Bhroin in Co. Kerry.
