"Pinkman: Seimhdile = A beetle Seimhdile means a beetle for beetling clothes and, by extension, the place where this work was done. Heavy clothes were soaked with water and beaten on a large flat stone with a wooden beetle or mallet, until they were at least partially clean. It was a common way of washing clothes, heavy clothes particularly, in former times. In his Supplement to O’Reilly’s Dictionary, O’Donovan gives seimdille, seindile, a beetle for beetling clothes, and also the form sidhdille. Dinneen has seimdille with the same meaning. And Joyce gives seimhdile as the Irish form of Shivdela. Compare Kinatevdilla, the western point of Clare Island, off Co. Mayo, Ceann-a’-tSeimhdile, beetle head. (Joyce). Another name for a beetle of this kind is ‘slis’. The Four Masters used the word at AD 1288, when they write Áth-Slisean, ford of the beetles."
