plain of standing stones
The earliest reference to this name is from the year 1779 (‘Galway’ in a land deed); 'gallmhagh' is the Irish form recorded in the Ordnance Survey Name Book (1840). One would expect to find some evidence predating the 18th century were the name to have its origin in the Irish language. Perhaps it is only a recycling of the English name of Gaillimh / Galway, referring to either city or county
