Explanatory note
- Gaeilge
crooked wood
An cuimilteach neamhghlórach ch- /x-/ a theacht i ndiaidh an -m déliopaigh (gan ghuta cúnta eatarthu, e.g. mar atá in camchuairt /ˈkaməˌxuərtʹ/ i nGaeilge na Mumhan) is cúis leis an athrú ó /-mx-/ go /-mp-/ le /p/ pléascach neamhghlórach sa bhéarlú — tá an t-ionad urlabhraíochta céanna ag /m/ is ag /p/. Dá dheasca seo rinneadh atuiscint ar an logainm mar dhá fhocal Béarla Camp-hill, ach thuig Ó Donnabháin a bhunús (1838 ‘recte ‘Camkill’’). Cf. 1836 ‘Campull’ faoi bf Camchoill (Sl) (#44755).
Féach leis bf Camchluain (#27924).
