Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

    church of (the) (wooded) height

Ba le manaigh liatha Mhainistir Laoise an teampall anseo agus d’fhan an baile fearainn ina chuid scartha de pharóiste sibhialta Mhainistir Laoise (féach Irish Monastic Possessions 136). Ní léir an foirm ón gcaint í ‘Cill Rois (pronounced Kyle-rish)’ ag Ó Corragáin (History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 387).

Maidir leis an ainm Béarla Ironmills, deir Ralf Loeber in Laois: History and Society gur dócha go raibh an mhuilleoireacht ar bun faoin mbliain 1613, ‘when Ridgeway requested Sir Richard Boyle, himself a developer of iron works and a cannon-foundry in Munster, to send … a skilful groundman or miner & hammerman.’ Sa bhliain 1659 luaitear ‘Iron Mill’ (‘2 English, 12 Irish’) chomh maith le ‘Kilrush’ (‘3 English, 27 Irish’) (Census 499).

Féach ‘metalworking site’ san Fhardal Seandálaíochta sa bf An Chlochóg (#27768) lastuaidh (www.archaeology.ie).

    Mionainmneacha:

    1. Glenavurder < Gleann an Mhurdair “the glen of the murder” an t-ainm a bhí ar an ngleanntán trína ritheann Ironmills River ón gcnoc anoir (Glenavurder Bridge SO; 1905 ‘Glannavurdher’, History and Antiquities of the Diocese of Ossory II 387). Cf. Boheravurder SO < Bóthar an Mhurdair “the road of the murder”, bf Tigh Mochua (#28116) in oirthuaisceart na barúntachta seo (cf. Litreacha na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis I 256).
    2. Mionainm eile anseo a luann Ó Corragáin is ea 1905 ‘Bool-Ee-Voara’ < Buaile Uí Mhóra “the cattle-fold, summer pasture of Ó Móra (sloinne)”.
    3. An cnoc teorann 306m in oirthear an bhaile fearainn seo (i gcoigríoch Cho. Chill Chainnigh), tugtar ‘Sleunotoigre’ air ar léarscáil 1563 < Sliabh na Coigríche “the mountain of the border”. Mhair an t-ainm, de réir an Chorragánaigh, mar Knuckoagrisheen Hill. (Cf. tagairt don abhainn teorann idir Ard Mhacha agus Muineachán ón mbliain 1654: ‘Owenna[c]oggery (which signifies the river of the meeres)’ Civil Survey X 70 < Abhainn na Coigríche (#116159).)
