Explanatory note

  • Gaeilge

Ní léir bunús an tsráidainm seo.

Tá ‘Kennel’ .i. conchró le feiscint ar leataoibh an bhóthair seo ar an gcéad eagrán den léarscáil sé orlach (1836–7). Ar an léarscáil athbhreithnithe a ghabhann le Luacháil Griffith (c. 1851), ‘Kennel (Old)’ atá ar an bhfoirgneamh céanna agus tá ainm an bhóthair marcáilte den chéad uair, ‘Kennelsfort Road’.

Ach má tá baint ag an gcéad eilimint den ainm ‘Kennelsfort (Road)’ leis an gconchró seo (agus ní féidir talamh slán a dhéanamh den mhéid sin), níl aon dealramh le kennel(s) +* fort* ‘dún, ráth, lios, srl.’ mar logainm comhshuite. Más fíor-logainm in aon chor é, caolseans gur thruailliú ar kennel(s) + ford ‘áth’ a bhí ann ó cheart (féach an srutháinín bídeach laisteas den chonchró ar an léarscáil 25 orlach). Ach is é is dóichí gur ainm bréag-ghalánta atá i Kennelsfort, bunaithe ar an bhfocal kennel ‘conchró’; b’fhéidir gur baisteadh é i dtosach báire ar theach a bhí ar an láthair seo, ach más ea ní mhaireann rian de mar ainm tí sna foinsí.

I bhfianaise a mhinice is a bhuailtear leis an struchtúr Béarla ainm pearsanta/sloinne +*’s *+fort i logainmneacha agus in aimneacha tithe móra, áfach, níor cheart na sloinnte Kendal(l) (sampla le fáil i gCo. Bhaile Átha Cliath i bhFiants Eilíse) agus Kennel féin (sampla le fáil i gCo. Aontroma i Luacháil Griffith) a chur as an áireamh.

Mar gheall ar an doiléire seo ar fad, meastar nach cóir Kennelsfort a aistriú sa leagan Gaeilge den tsráidainm. (Tabharfar faoi ndeara nach bhfuil de bhrí leis an aistriúchán Gaeilge ar na seanphlátaí ‘Bóthar Chró Gadhar’ ach ‘dog-kennel road’.)

  • English

The origin of this streetname is unclear.

A ‘Kennel’ is shown on the side of this road on the first edition of the six-inch map (1836–7). On the Griffith's Valuation revision (c. 1851), this building is named ‘Kennel (Old)’ and the name of the road is given for the first time, viz. ‘Kennelsfort Road’.

But although the first element of the name ‘Kennelsfort (Road)’ may refer to this dog-house (and this cannot be taken for granted), the compound kennel(s) + fort, meaning a ring-fort or similar structure, is implausible here. If Kennelsfort is a genuine placename at all, it may represent a corruption of kennel(s) + ford (note the tiny stream to the south on the 25 inch map). But the most likely explanation is that Kennelsfort was coined as a fancy name, based on the word kennel; it may originally have been given to a house at this spot.

In view of the frequency with which the structure personal name + *’s *+ fort occurs in placenames and house names, derivation from a surname such as Kendal(l) (attested in the Elizabethan Fiants) or Kennel itself (found in Co. Antrim in Griffith's Valuation) cannot not be ruled out either.

Due to this uncertainty, we consider that Kennelsfort is best left untranslated in the Irish form of the streetname. (Note that the Irish translation on the old name-plates, ‘Bóthar Chró Gadhar’, means simply ‘dog-kennel road’.)
