Máire — ainm pearsanta.
Tá an t-ainm seo amhrasach. Níl aon dealramh leis an míniú a thugtar in Journal of the Royal Irish Academy i, 187 (1838) gur Cnoc Maraí, ‘hill of the mariner, seaman’, atá ann: “This mound … was popularly known in the neighbouring village of Chapelizod by the Irish appellation of Cnoc-maraidhe, a name which, according to the best Irish scholars who have been consulted, appears to signify the hill of the mariners [sic, iolra].”
Is é ‘Knockvary’ an litriú is luaithe dá bhfuil againn (1642c), litriú nach dtugann le fios cé acu mh- caol nó leathan a bhí i dtús an dara heilimint; b’fhéidir gurb ainm pearsanta eile a bhí ann ó cheart, m.sh. Meadhraí. - English
the hill of Máire?
Máire — personal name.
This name is doubtful. The explanation given in the Journal of the Royal Irish Academy i, 187 (1838) that it represents Cnoc Maraí, ‘hill of the mariner, seaman’, is unsatisfactory: “This mound … was popularly known in the neighbouring village of Chapelizod by the Irish appellation of Cnoc-maraidhe, a name which, according to the best Irish scholars who have been consulted, appears to signify the hill of the mariners [sic, plural].”
‘Knockvary’, the oldest spelling we have (1642c), does not indicate whether the second element began with a slender or broad mh-; perhaps it originally contained another personal name, e.g. Meadhraí.
